From 25 March to 18 April, Gallery by the Harbour is pleased to present “Life of Hamster SUKEROKU”, the first overseas original painting exhibition by Japanese illustrator GOTTE, featuring 45 original paintings of Sukeroku the hamster, a huge success on social media.
Inspired by her pet hamster Sukeroku, GOTTE started making sketches of her endearing pet performing human chores, and soon became an expert at it. Personified, Sukeroku leads an exotic life that would make many jealous — he is a connoisseur of good food and films. He loiters around with his mobile phone in hand, and continues his adventures when he is recharged. The endearing character has captured the hearts of fans near and far, with 310K followers on GOTTE’s Instagram and counting.
“I am very honoured to be showing my original works at Gallery by the Harbour. I usually publish my works online, making it difficult to see the details clearly. I am very glad to share my original sketches with the audience in Hong Kong this time,” said GOTTE.
In addition to Sukeroku’s regular adventures, a new series “SUKEROKU in Hong Kong”, a set of 5 original paintings featuring Sukeroku enjoying iconic sights and food in Hong Kong will be shown and sold exclusively at the exhibition, marking the first overseas sale of GOTTE’s original works. Hong Kong’s colourful neon lights and mesmerised by its scenery, Sukeroku is shown documenting his solo trip by taking ample selfies. His sentiments for the city are sure echoed by many among the audience.
“I imagined: What if Sukeroku goes to Hong Kong? What if Hong Kong exists on the hamster map? What if … These imaginations inspire this series,” said GOTTE.
Like in most of GOTTE’s exhibitions, most of the original paintings shown are not for sale. A set of 15 souvenir art cards has been specially designed for this exhibition for fans to own a piece of Sukeroku’s cuteness. The cards will be sold in two phases at the gallery. The first 8 cards will be available from 26 March to 4 April. 7 additional designs will be sold from 5 April to 18 April.
A variety of adorable merchandise are also available for sale. Let’s bring Sukeroku home!
