Emerging Taiwanese Artist Robin Huang and Thai Contemporary Artist TOS Suntos debut their First Joint Exhibition “First Contact” in Hong Kong. Held from 19 June to 14 July 2024 at the Gallery by the Harbour, the exhibition presents an unprecedented cross-disciplinary artistic collaboration. Robin is renowned for his unique plant-based sculptures, while TOS is skilled in creating Thai-infused monster imagery. Although the two artists’ creative styles may seem vastly different, they have ingeniously incorporated each other’s cultural elements in their works, resulting in a ground-breaking artistic exchange.
In the “First Contact” exhibition, the two artists jointly explore the five fundamental elements of every civilization: “Weapon”, “Animal”, “Plant”, “Peace”, and “Faith”, interpreting these concepts through their distinctive perspectives.
Taiwanese Artist Robin Huang
This marks the first time that Robin and TOS have collaborated to co-host a dual exhibition in Hong Kong. The exhibition features 8 large-scale paintings created by TOS, showcasing his unique Thai-infused monster aesthetics. It also presents 7 newly created paintings by Robin, as well as 8 imaginative sculptural works, fully demonstrating his mastery in the realm of plant-based sculptures.
Even more exciting is the duo’s first-ever collaborative creation – a 6.5-meter-high installation that serves as a must-take photo opportunity. The full-scale work is displayed on the museum’s glass curtain wall. At the centre of TOS’ unique giant Thai-inspired monster, Robin’s plant-based sculptural figures emerge, making for a surprising and visually captivating integration of their creative styles. This collaborative design undoubtedly delivers a fresh and impactful experience for visitors.
In addition to the captivating artworks, this exhibition marks the first-ever release of two brand-new limited-edition art toys, each designed by Robin and TOS respectively, inspired by the exhibition’s theme. A lottery-based purchasing event is held for these collectibles.
During the exhibition’s open period from 19-21 June 2024, visitors who spend HK$150 or more on on-site merchandise can submit their basic personal information to receive a lottery ticket. The drawing results will be announced by the organizer on their official Instagram (@1littleplanet) at 12pm on 22 June. Winners will then be able to purchase the art toys in person at the exhibition from 23-25 June.
The exhibition also features a range of merchandise for sale, including pins, t-shirts, and tote bags. Visitors can not only enjoy the exhibition, but also take home these special souvenirs!
