A picture speaks a thousand words.Held at Gallery by the Harbour from 2 to 19 April, 2020, National Geographic Wheelock Hong Kong Photo Contest 2019 Winners’ Exhibition, offers an international platform not only for Hong Kong photographers aged 16 and above to showcase their awe-inspiring works, but also to reveal the best of The Oriental Pearl to the world.
Themed “Hong Kong Story: Nature, City and People”, the National Geographic Wheelock Hong Kong Photo Contest 2019 is divided into five categories: “Nature”, “City”, “People”, “Mobile Photography” and “Monochrome Photography”. This year, the competition has received almost 3000 submissions from both photography enthusiasts and professionals from a total of 15 countries such as Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Mainland China, Spain, USA, Hungary and more.
The judging panel this year comprises National Geographic photographer Catherine Karnow; renowned Hong Kong ecology photography Samson So; and Lee Yungshih, editor-in-chief of National Geographic magazine Chinese edition.
Karnow says: “With the clever use of light and shadow, photographers chronicle the moving details of daily life. Like love letters, their work proclaims the most charming and vibrant side of Hong Kong.
So adds: “The diverse works that we got this year portray the details of Hong Kongers’ daily lives; they convey the rhythm of the city and illustrate what it means to clash old with new as history turns one page after another.
Li from Taiwan says: “This year’s works were impressive in terms of materials, techniques and messages conveyed. We hope that future works will continue to spotlight on this dazzling city and reflect on the myriad features Hong Kong has to offer.”
