Drawing inspiration from the East and the West, Japanese fashion has earned international credibility for its craftsmanship and point-of-view. Japanese fashion designer Tomo Koizumi has enjoyed a meteoric rise in a short period of time, establishing himself as a big name on the fashion scene.
The Rising Star: From Instagram to Marc Jacobs
“If you dream it, it can come true.”
Born in Japan, 1988, Tomo Koizumi became interested in fashion under his mother’s influence. His dreams of becoming a fashion designer began when he first saw John Galliano’s works for Dior in 2004, which greatly inspired the 14-year-old Koizumi. He then started his eponymous brand in university and oversaw design, production, and the release of his collections via Instagram. His work was later discovered by British fashion designer Giles Deacon and his friend Katie Grand, a working partner of Marc Jacobs and the editor-in-chief of The Love Magazine. These two helped vault Koizumi’s career to new heights, including his fashion show debut at Marc Jacob’s New York Flagship in 2019. Tomo Koizumi instantly rose to fame with his ruffled gown in tulle, made with extravagant, rich layers and spectrums of vivid colors. His playful and fun-filled design has since then become his signature, iconic style.
From Iconic Ruffled Gowns into Foldable Umbrellas
This year, Tomo Koizumi debuts his first worldwide shopping mall collaboration by designing an exclusive foldable umbrella for Harbour City. Tomo Koizumi has earned the respect and admiration from the fashion world ever since he presented his first collection featuring flamboyant ruffled gowns in tulle in 2019. Known for utilizing bright hues and rich, fluffy layers, his extravagant and uplifting design language continues to push the boundaries of fashion.
For his exclusive design for Harbour City’s Limited Edition Foldable Umbrella, Tomo Koizumi incorporates flowers into the silhouettes of his signature ruffled gowns. These masterfully printed umbrellas feature dreamy, ombré layers like a cascade of rainbows– a cheerful nod to nature’s beauty and wonder, regardless of the circumstances.
An Umbrella with Fashion and Innovation
The Limited Edition Foldable Umbrella is attached to a colorful elastic ribbon that can be worn around the wrist for ease of carrying. It can also be detached from the umbrella and worn as a cute scrunchie or bracelet, keeping in line with this season’s trends.
